Getting it right first time

Come within 10 to 15 cm. A barcode is read close up: too far away, the thin bars merge and the decoder gives up.

Frame it flat, without glare. Glossy packaging throws the ceiling light straight back onto the bars. Tilt the product slightly rather than the phone.

Keep the whole code in frame, including the white margins left and right. They are part of the code: without them, reading fails even on crisp bars.

Nothing leaves your browser. The image is decoded on your device. Neither the photo nor the reference read is sent to a server.

Which formats are recognised? The common linear codes: EAN-13 and EAN-8 for products sold in Europe, UPC-A and UPC-E for North America, Code 128 and Code 39 for internal labelling, Code 93, ITF for shipping cartons, and Codabar.

And QR codes? They belong to another family, two-dimensional. The QR code scanner is dedicated to them: it shows the link before opening it, which would make no sense for a product reference.

Frequently asked questions about barcode reading

Is this barcode reader free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no limit on readings. No app to install: everything happens in the page.
Does it work on iPhone?
Yes. Safari provides no native decoder, so the page loads a JavaScript decoder the first time you read a code — a few hundred kilobytes, once. On Chrome and Android the system decoder is used and nothing is downloaded.
Are my photos sent anywhere?
No. The image and the camera stream are processed on your device. Nothing is transmitted or stored.
The reader gives me a number, not a product name. Why?
A barcode only holds a number: it identifies a product in a database, it does not describe anything by itself. Finding the name means querying a product database, which this tool does not do — and which would mean sending your reading to a third party.
Reading fails, what should I do?
Get within 10-15 cm, avoid glare, and keep the white margins on both sides of the code inside the image. If the code is printed on a curved surface — a bottle, a tin — turn it to present the flattest area.
