Choisir sa fréquence

Bodybuilding program by frequency

The training frequency decides everything else: the volume per session, the distribution of muscle groups and the recovery time you have. This page helps you choose between 3, 4 and 5 sessions per week.

What frequency really changes
A frequency strength training program starts from a simple question: how many sessions per week can you actually do? This number is not an organizational detail. It sets the volume of work that you can distribute, the number of sets per muscle and the place of rest days. Two people who do the same weekly total but who spread it differently do not obtain the same sensations or the same fatigue. Research on muscle hypertrophy shows that training a muscle twice a week produces better muscle gains than once, for the same volume. The choice of frequency is therefore the first lever, even before the choice of exercises.
Le facteur agenda
There is a second, more down-to-earth factor: your schedule. A training program that's perfect on paper but impossible to follow is worthless. Better three weight training sessions held every week for six months than five sessions abandoned after three weeks. This is why low frequencies remain very effective, especially for beginners, who progress with little stimulus. Conversely, an experienced practitioner needs a greater volume to continue to develop muscle mass, and this volume becomes difficult to fit into two or three sessions that are too long.
3, 4 or 5 days a week
The following pages detail each option. The 3 days per week format is based on full body or half-split sessions. The 4 day format opens the door to the upper/lower body, with each muscle worked twice. The 5-day format allows for a split by finer muscle group, with more isolation exercises. None of these frequencies is absolutely superior: everything will depend on your experience, your recovery, your sleep and your protein intake. Start with the frequency you will hold, then adjust. It is always easier to increase a workload than to make up for weeks without training.

A typical week, for example

Here is a generic week in four sessions, an intermediate format which suits the majority of practitioners and which uses each muscle twice.

4 séances par semaine. Les exercices, les charges, les séries et les temps de repos sont calculés selon votre niveau et le matériel dont vous disposez, puis ajustés à mesure que vous progressez.

From one week to the next, add a repetition or a small amount of weight to the first exercise of each session, and keep the rest the same as long as the technique holds.

Les critères

Four factors that decide your frequency

Before choosing a number of sessions, look honestly at these four points.

Votre temps disponible

Votre temps disponible

Include the ride, warm-up and shower, not just the work under the bar. A sustainable frequency over three months is better than an ambitious schedule abandoned in two weeks.

Your ability to recover

Your ability to recover

Sleep, stress and protein intake determine how quickly you can recover between sessions. If fatigue builds up and performance declines, the frequency is too high for the moment.

Votre expérience

Votre expérience

A beginner progresses with a modest volume and gains above all in technique and coordination. An advanced exerciser must increase total volume to continue to stimulate muscle growth, which pushes toward greater frequency.

Vos objectifs

Vos objectifs

Muscle mass gain goals require volume spread over the week and moderate intensity. Strength-focused work favors fewer exercises, short sets of repetitions and longer rest times.

A program built on your availability

You indicate how many sessions you can do, your level and your equipment. The generator distributes muscle groups, number of sets and rest days over the week.

The guided session, exercise by exercise

The guided session, exercise by exercise

The app displays the current exercise, loads from the last time and starts the rest timer. You no longer have to write down anything on your phone between two series.

Monitoring that adjusts the load

Monitoring that adjusts the load

Each performance is recorded, session after session. The curves show where you are stagnating, and the program suggests increasing the load when the target repetitions are reached.

Questions fréquentes

How many sessions per week do you need to progress in bodybuilding?
Three sessions per week are enough to progress, especially for beginners. Beyond that, four to five sessions make it possible to distribute a larger volume without lengthening each session. The main thing is to use each muscle at least twice a week. The weekly total of series counts more than the number of days in theaters.
How long does it take to recover between two sessions?
A muscle worked seriously generally requires 48 hours before being used again. This time frame depends on the intensity, volume and your sleep. Large groups like legs often recover more slowly than arms. If the pain or drop in performance persists, space out the weight training sessions further.
Can we train every day?
This is not necessary for building muscle mass, and it leaves little room for recovery. If you want to come six times, reduce the volume per session and alternate the areas worked. Plan at least one day without training to let the fatigue subside. Too much frequency without rest ends up slowing down gains.
Full body or split: what to choose depending on the frequency?
Below four sessions, the full body is often the most effective: each muscle is worked in each pass. After four sessions, an upper body and lower body split becomes more practical. At five sessions, you can target one or two muscle groups per session with more isolation exercises.
Should you change frequencies over time?
Yes, it is even desirable. A busy period at work justifies going to three sessions without feeling guilty. Conversely, if you are stagnating with a volume that is no longer increasing, adding a session is a simple option. Understanding that frequency is a setting, not a fixed rule, helps to stick with it over the long term.
