Bodybuilding program by objective

A bodybuilding program cannot be judged in absolute terms: it is judged in relation to its objective. This page compares the main training families, mass gain, volume, cutting, strength or cardio, and directs you to the right page.

Where to start depending on your goal
Many bodybuilding practitioners wonder which bodybuilding program to follow first. The answer depends less on your level and more on the direction you want to take. Gaining mass, gaining strength, losing fat mass or improving muscular endurance do not require the same series, nor the same rest time, nor the same intensity. A beginner who wants to build muscle and an intermediate who wants to lift heavy loads nevertheless share a common basis: multi-joint exercises, regular progression and respected recovery. This benchmark page helps you identify your goal, then open the dedicated page that details the work week by week.
What changes from one objective to another
The settings that change from one lens to another are easy to remember. To develop muscle volume, we often work between eight and twelve repetitions, with average rest. For strength, we go down to three or five repetitions on the basic exercises, with a long rest and heavy loads. To lose weight, work becomes denser, break times shorten and food becomes as important as the gym. Muscular endurance is built on long series and a sustained pace. The squat, the bench press or the row remain present everywhere: it is their dosage that varies, not their usefulness.
The simplest program works
The best program for starting bodybuilding is almost always the simplest. Three sessions per week in full body, five to six movements per session, two days of rest between each session: this is enough to progress for several months. When progress slows down, we switch to a split, often push pull legs, to increase volume without lengthening each session. The principle of progressive overload remains the common thread: add a repetition, a kilo or a series from one workout to another. It's not spectacular, but it's effective, and that's what makes the difference between a physique that stagnates and one that evolves.

A typical week, for example

Here is a generic week in push pull legs, over four sessions, which serves as a basis before being adjusted to your objective.

4 séances par semaine. Les exercices, les charges, les séries et les temps de repos sont calculés selon votre niveau et le matériel dont vous disposez, puis ajustés à mesure que vous progressez.

From week to week, add one repetition or small increment of load on the basic exercises, and only change movements when the progression really stops.

How to know what goal to aim for

Four simple guidelines to decide before opening the detailed page.

You want to gain volume

You want to gain volume

Your priority is to build muscle mass, with work between eight and twelve repetitions and a moderate calorie surplus. The mass gain and volume pages detail this type of program.

You want to lift heavier

You want to lift heavier

There, the goal is to gain strength on the squat, bench press and deadlift. The series are short, the rest is long, and technique comes before fatigue.

You want to lose fat mass

You want to lose fat mass

Weight training then serves to preserve muscle while diet creates the deficit. The cutting and weight loss pages explain how to dose without emptying yourself.

You want breath and health

You want breath and health

Improving your endurance and physical condition requires combining weights and cardio without one canceling out the other. The dedicated page describes how to distribute the two throughout the week.

The program is generated for you

You indicate your objective, your level, your equipment and the number of sessions per week available. The application builds the split, chooses the exercises and sets sets, repetitions and rest.

The session is guided live

Each exercise is displayed with its target load, number of sets and recovery timer. You follow the screen instead of counting in your head between two sets.

Progress is tracked automatically

The loads entered feed curves by movement and by muscle group. The app applies progressive overload and adjusts your program when you stagnate.

Questions fréquentes

What is the best program to start bodybuilding?
For the first months, a full body over three sessions per week remains the most effective. You repeat the same basic exercises often, which accelerates technical learning. Allow five to six movements per session and a day of rest between each. The split will come later, when progress slows down.
Should you choose only one objective at a time?
Yes, in the vast majority of cases. Gaining mass and losing fat pull diet in two opposite directions, and wanting both often means getting neither. Work in blocks of eight to twelve weeks, then change your goals. A beginner is the only notable exception: he can progress on several levels at the same time.
Is push pull legs suitable for everyone?
The leg push pull is an excellent format for an intermediate practitioner who trains four to six times per week. Below three sessions, it becomes unprofitable because each muscle group is used too little. A full body or a top/bottom is then preferable. The format matters less than regularity over several months.
How long before we see progress?
The first improvements in strength appear quickly, often within the first weeks, because they mainly come from better coordination. Visible physical changes require more patience and depend a lot on diet and sleep. Track your charges rather than the mirror. It is a much more reliable indicator on a daily basis.
Can we change programs along the way?
Changing too often prevents you from measuring anything. Leave a program at least six to eight weeks before judging. If the charges rise again, keep it. If everything stagnates despite good recovery, adjust the volume or split rather than replacing everything.
